I just read a fascinating blog entry about group dynamics that I
thought people might enjoy reading in the context of the vote on the
Scheme steering committee:

I don't mean to suggest that anyone on the list is a "bad apple." On
the contrary, the Scheme community is an extraordinary group of
people. However, the research described in the article shows how
quickly groups can devolve from enthusiastic and energetic to
disenchanted and lethargic, and how little it takes to move a group in
that direction. We need all the help we can get to keep that from
happening to us.
I hope we can find some diplomats among the nominees -- people who are
good at bringing groups back together when their differences seem
irreconcilable and their enthusiasm is flagging.
