Oh good grief.  What a bitter irony, that we seem to have gained a bending
over backward about the form of democracy just as we seem to have lost its
essence.  There are some people involved in this discussion whose sense of
aesthetics I distrust deeply, but there is not a single person whose sense
of honor I so distrust as to want to tie our hands that way.
